He could rejoice as well as anyone, but it’s always a lucid, dignified rejoicing. The idea of “letting go” would have struck Schütz as ridiculous and unseemly. This setting of Psalm 98, Sing unto the Lord a New Song, is a fine example of Schütz in joyful mode, and is full of little pictorial touches. There are delicious running notes at 1.48 to evoke trumpets and drums, and again for the roaring sea (“Das Meer brausen”) at 2.27. |
