I distract her with talk of owning dogs and hens and horses, and of the joys of hearing nightjars and chatterjacks through our open windows as we sleep (I must look these up and check they’re actually birds) but I am momentarily thrown – not least by that mistress line, which I have to admit is a cracker. Then, just as I’m putting together some nonsense about it being like a potted plant? Being put in the soil? So it can put down proper roots kind of thing? She pats my knee. After 10 years of marriage, I have discovered that the reason our lives flow so smoothly is that my wife likes to be fully acquainted with worst-case scenarios. |
