Long guns can be transfered (depending on local law) without FFL involvement at any time - estate sale, yard sale, etc. CURRENTLY, firearms can be transfered without FFL involvement if the transfer is stated in a will. That does not mean the inheritor is legally alowed to own the transfered firearm. This has been under attack the last few years which is the reason for the rush to set up trusts and estates by firearm owners with large collections and has become a fairly common practice.
