His performance in The Song of the Wayfarer - Maurice Béjart’s simple meditation on the itinerant life of the dancer, choreographed for Nureyev in 1971 - is fantastically refined, full of heart-stopping lines and immaculate fifth positions. The piece is a duet, and Esteban Berlanga does a fine job of shadowing his fellow dancer’s movements. But Muntagirov is what this triple bill is all about. He conjures the restless ghost of Nureyev - how might he have performed the Béjart, one wonders? - while revealing the promise of his own greatness. |
