British garden designer Andy Sturgeon has designed a modernist show garden in the international area, while Charles and Lily Jencks have created the show’s highlight: one of their massive landform projects. Inspired by the Eastern tradition of miniaturising and visually echoing the landscape, the design evokes the tradition of mountain veneration in Korea. “They do still have this connection to the landscape, which is severed in the rest of the world,” Charles tells me. “It’s a living tradition. They love getting out, walking and wandering. In their hearts they are animists, so they intuitively relate to everything that grows.” The massive landforms symbolically map and quote the surrounding topography by means of seven Jencks-trademark swirling mounds and a central lake representing the city. |
