Out of sugar and energy on the second of the climbs of the legendary Alpe d’Huez, he was broken on the climbs for the only time and a little kid running out into the road could easily have knocked him off his bike. He was feeling so rough, he even took a 20sec time penalty for conspiring with Richie Porte to take an illegal feed from the team car with less than three miles left. And after all that? He still increased his overall lead by 37 sec – and that finally knocked the stuffing out of everyone. |
