If anything, it’s a victim of bad timing. Reign would have been a perfect fit for the CW in the dim and distant past of two years ago when it’s Greatest Hit was Gossip Girl, which trafficked in similar tales of intrigue and power games in a royal court. Currently, the teen-aimed network is awash in vampires and superheroes, which makes a show about a 16th-century alliance between Scotland and France something of an odd duck. (At the moment the series doesn’t have a UK home, but seems destined for E4.) It doesn’t really pass muster as a full-blown bodice-ripper: there’s zero heat between Mary and her two suitors. When she’s emoting at Francis (Toby Regbo), her betrothed, it’s hard not to focus on the wispy strands of facial hair arranged across his face to give his delicate features the hint of arrogance. |
